Description

One of the most interesting things I wrote for the Sombraverse is how the betrayal of Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, and Pinkie Pie serves to turn Rarity into one of the greediest and most self-serving ponies in Equestria. She’s still quite the seamstress and fashionista, but you can’t really say she’s nice or generous anymore. She’s also in her second gala dress here because she pretty much dresses like that all the time. Since she eventually becomes part of the Canterlot elite, she embraces the whole “dress to impress” philosophy.

I’d like to apologize to everyone for taking so long with this. To be perfectly honest, I was slowed down by a combination of life’s everyday annoyances and pure laziness. Anyway, let’s get on with it.

Rarity was hurt when three of her friends turned against Equestria, but the pain grew worse when she saw how it affected Fluttershy and Applejack. The former became so reclusive that she had to survive off the kindness of the townsponies to get by (meaning that she had to rely on other ponies bringing her food and such as she refused to leave her home) and the latter became more and more accustomed to lying in an effort to assure herself and those around her everything would be alright in the end. It got worse when the Crystal War started. Fluttershy retreated to the Everfree Forest along with a few others when word got out that Zecora was running a refugee camp for those who refused to take sides. Rarity never heard from her again. As for Applejack, she left Ponyville without warning one day. Rarity heard that it was because she had become the prime suspect in a recent stream of thefts throughout the part of Ponyville that was inhabited by the town’s most affuential families (and Rarity was shocked beyond belief when she found out that Applejack was indeed guilty). In just a couple of years, Rarity had lost all of her friends. As a result of that, the fashion savvy unicorn soon found herself unable to truly feel happy. Not even Sweetie Belle could cheer her up and Faust knows the little filly tried. In a desperate bid to fill the growing void in her heart and stave off both loneliness and the onset of depression, Rarity threw herself into her work and focused on making her dream of being a world class fashion designer come true. Soon enough, the mare made a name for herself in the fashion industry and her clothing lines brought in millions of bits. Her success seemed to be the only thing that ever brought her joy, so she continued the pursuit and used her earnings to indulge in the finer things. When she became wealthy enough, she moved to Canterlot, promising to herself that she would never look back to her old life in Ponyville. The last thing she wanted to do was to look back on a life that nearly ended with her descending into misery. This cost her the once strong bond she had with Sweetie Belle as the two slowly became estranged after Rarity left. After all, the alabaster unicorn had accomplished her dream faster than she thought. As it turned out, her friends and family had been holding her back (or at least that’s how she came to see it).

As time went on, Rarity learned how to play the Canterlot nobility’s game to further her own goals, even going as far as to charm several eligible bachelors amongst them so she could increase her own wealth by marrying into one of their families. Soon enough, one managed to capture her attention and it was the most ironic of her suitors: Prince Blueblood (who’s actually an Archduke). She mainly indulged him for the humor of making him chase her as opposed to it being the other way around like when they first met at the Grand Galloping Gala. She was also after the wealth and prestige she would inevitably gain by marrying him, but that was pretty much a bonus to her. However, Blueblood was also trying to play her in a vain attempt to get revenge for how she had humiliated him back then. This little back and forth between them went on until Rarity finally got impatient and paid a unicorn chemist to make her a love potion. One way or another, she’d win the little game Blueblood insisted on playing with her. Rarity manages to get her very pompous suitor to drink the love potion by spiking his wine with it, successfully making him fall deeply in love with her. What Rarity didn’t know was that the chemist she hired to make the concoction was really a changeling in disguise. What she thought was an equine love potion was actually a changeling love potion, which meant the effect was no different from the mind control spell Queen Chrysalis used on Shining Armor. To put it bluntly, Rarity turned Blueblood into a lovesick slave. Because the signs were much more subtle and Blueblood wasn’t being drained of his love or magic, nopony could tell that he had been brainwashed, not even Princesses Celestia and Luna. Cadance would’ve seen it in an instant if her mind wasn’t on other things (namely the betrayal of her sister-in-law). Rarity didn’t mind it at all since her little slipup just made it easier for her to control Blueblood. Just after the coronation of Princess Sunset Shimmer, Rarity and Blueblood married and the former used the latter’s influence over the nobility to secure her place at the pinnacle of high society. Rarity had done in just a few short years what countless others spent their entire lives trying to achieve: she climbed to the very top of the social ladder. The only other pony who had as much influence over the Canterlot elite as she did was Fancypants. As such, he and Rarity have a very shaky friendship since they view each other as threats as much as they do pawns in the game. Even more so, she had Blueblood in a position where it wouldn’t matter if he ever came out of the trance he was in. Rarity had effectively usurped him, so he’d still be right under her hoof if he ever managed to break free from her hold. After her mental recovery, Twilight Sparkle attempted to fix her broken friendship with Rarity, but the generous unicorn she had hoped to see again was gone. Instead, Twilight met a vain and selfish noblemare who didn’t even bother with any pleasantries with her. The old Rarity would’ve tried to make amends with her old friend, but the new Rarity wasn’t going to waste her time playing nice with a traitor when there was nothing in it for her. Rarity found out too late that she could’ve used a friendship with Twilight to get on Princess Sunset’s good side and lamented on the lost opportunity for a bit before focusing on maintaining her reputation in Canterlot. Sweetie Belle also tries to get the old Rarity back, but her plan fails as well and it causes the very thin thread their once strong sisterly bond had been hanging on to finally snap. Rarity told Sweetie that they were no longer sisters and that she was no longer welcome in her home. If not for the fact that she was a popular musician in Equestria and had a bit more influence over the Canterlot elite than her, Rarity would’ve blacklisted Sweetie too.Because of Orion, I do intend to design foals for all the Sombraverse couples. That being said, you can expect me to design at least one RariBlood foal later on. I’ve already begun working on Applejack’s kids and I have a base idea on what I want to do for Rarity’s own foal(s).
