Twilight never really was one to care about exercise. Back in Canterlot, that wasn’t a problem as she was so wound up in her studies, that she sometimes forgot meals altogether. That luxury wasn’t so readily available when she moved to Ponyville and met one Pinkie Pie. After that, the option to skip a meal was long gone. Pinkie Pie ensured that all of her friends, every last one, had such a supply of snacks that they could be fed for years to come…not that Pinkie expected such supply caches to last that long! So, it was only natural that Twilight would blimp out….but even as the weight piled on, she never did come to care. Being a magical, technicolor horse relieves one of worries such as health due to weight, and with magic at her disposal…being large really wasn’t all that bad!
 
As for the clothes, she briefly enjoyed a time as Luna’s adopted student, to see what the Lady of the Night could teach her. While she returned to her own princessly duties soon after, she never did abandon the style.
