fluttercord isnt here simply because they dont really ever get married. it’s a pony tradition and discord, as a draconequus, doesnt see the need, while fluttershy isnt one for grand gestures or parties like that. they’re quite content in their relationship without a big party or marriage ceremony (they still call each other husband/wife tho).
so before i get into the mane six’s individual wedding’s, i want to outline equestrian marriage traditions, and how they vary from earth pony to unicorn to pegasi. i touched on it briefly before but ill do it again here, in a bit more detail.
Pegasi traditions: when a pegasus proposes, they traditionally offer their partner one of their feathers as a symbol for their engagement. If their partner accepts, the partner plucks one of their own feathers (or, well, waits until their next molt bc ouch). Instead of exchanging it, they keep their own feathers either around their neck in a necklace or behind their ear or something simmilar. Only at the alter, after their vows, do they swap their feathers.
In terms of wedding attire - while in most equestrian races it’s common for the bride to wear a dress and the groom to wear a suit, more often than not in pegasi weddings both the bride AND groom wear suits - mostly for ease of flight, bc in addition to the first dance, most pegasi weddings have a “flight dance” - which sounds romantic, in theory, however it is usually unrehearsed and looks pretty ungraceful (picture two bird horses squawking at each other).
Unicorn traditions: Unicorn culture probably has the closest we consider to a “traditional” marriage in the west irl in terms of engagement momentos. A unicorn proposes to their partner with the engagement ring first. In between the proposal and the wedding itself, both unicorns spend the time (if necessary) learning this traditional spell (idk what it’d be called, probably something in old ponyish or whatever that language is called) individually. At the vows, each couple “knights” the other with their horn, and after the kiss they finally perform their spell together, combining their magic and lighting up the wedding hall. as a “symbol” for their full undivided “love” for each other. ponies are corny idk what to tell you.
in terms of wedding garments, the bride’s dress is typically a lot more…elegant, and flowy, as is the theme of unicorns. The groom will also usually wear some form of knights uniform, though this is not typically expected of poorer/lower class unicorns.
Earth Pony traditions: In terms of engagement momentos, earth ponies propose with…horseshoes. the original engagement horseshoe is typically the ponies first (often rusty, and not very pleasent) horseshoe. if their partner accepts, they keep their partner’s shoe - until the wedding day. then, they are fitted with more custom fitted horse shoes at the alter, after the vows.
Earth ponies tend to have a LOT of dancing at their weddings - and not the graceful, slow kind, either. the first dance is hardly ever a slow one and much of the dancing goes late into the night. Their wedding attire, particularly the bride’s dress, is designed with this mind - while they don’t need as much free movement as pegasi do for the flight dance, they dont usually have long flowing dresses that restrict their movement.
in terms of marriages between different races, it really is down to the individual couples and their heritage, so much of these traditions have sort of blended together in most weddings. However, the most generally accepted engagement momento/ wedding momento is the horse shoe - simply because it’s very easily accessible to every one of the races.
AND NOW, very few quick ideas about each of their weddings bc im a sucker for pain
Twidash
as ive said before, their wedding was VERY big because twi is a princess and u kno. they gotta…. bc of the last royal wedding, however, every single guard in canterlot was on HYPER alert out of fear chrysalis (or something simmilar) could happen again. Thankfully, nothing happened, but security was there and READY.Twilight and Rainbow agreed they would have a mix of both unicorn and pegasi traditions (note how twi has a flowy traditionally unicorn dress while rainbow has a suit, a more pegasi thang) - HOWEVER, they were very settled on using the feathers for their engagement/wedding momentos. Twilight’s mother however was very insistent that she have a wedding ring. So they just…did both lolRarity made both their outfits of course. Twilight insisted that she not have a veil however, bc of the patriarchal symbolism that goes with it. she is THAT bitch (twilight has a lot of problems with veils throughout her life wink wink see my princess head canons wink wink)Though their first dance was held together pretty well, their flight dance was….messy. Twilight is not the best dancer nor flier and Rainbow’s a complete show off, so it mostly involved Rainbow pulling a very clumsy and screaming Twilight about the sky before finishing off with a somewhat unwarrented sonic rainboom. in front of hundreds of canterlot elites. the rest of the mane six were losing it laughing.PINKIE PLANNED IT OF COURSE!Cheesepie
Being the absolute POWER COUPLE they planned their own weddings together. ICONIC.Yknow what’s also iconic? When Rarity was trying to design their outfits, Cheese was adamant that he be matching his wife - and like, REALLY matching. he really wanted to wear a dress (he thought hers was adorable and she HAD to share it!)Their wedding was one big hot mess, but a VERY WELL ORGANISED hot mess. Very traditionally earth pony-an, in that they had a lot of dancing, way way into the night…and a lot of drinking….and food…and music…and drinking…..lots of drinking…The others of the mane six had very slow first dances but not for cheesepie! it was still slow in comparison to the rest of the night, but i imagine it’d probably be to “burning love” - still pretty traditional, but like, upbeat, u knowIGNEOUS DO NOT INTERACT!!! while cloudy quartz was invited, as well as all of pinkie’s sisters, bc she loves them all, igneous was not invited - and even if he had been, he likely wouldn’t have shown anyway. Pinkie could not care less even if she tried.
Rarijack
I was gonna add her in here but I got lazy - by their wedding, heart stitcher was about… 2ish? i guess? she’d have been the flower girl, with a bit of help from maybe sweetie belle or someone just to make sure she didnt trip down the aisle. cutie patootie.Apple Jack desperately wanted to wear her mother’s wedding dress - however, Pear Butter wasn’t as… bulky, as Apple Jack is. She did fit in her father’s suit quite perfectly however. Rarity begged her to let her touch it up a little, though (it was in quite a poor state when they found it). Apple Jack obliged but kept a VERY WATCHFUL EYE.Twilight might not like the traditional veil, but Rarity sure as fuck wanted one and would NOT take it off (“I’m marrying a mare anyway who cares!!”)Rarity designed her own dress, of course, and Pinkie planned their wedding too. She’s out to plan all of the mane six weddings god damn it.Rarity wanted a very elegant and traditional unicorn styled wedding. Apple Jack was hardly fussed, provided that they kept in the copious amounts of dancing into the night - which HAD to include square dancing - and the wedding venue had to be the apple farm/in the barn. Rarity considered it a fair trade IF she didnt have to square dance. She got dragged into it anyway.
