The main idea was just to draw the mane six in my more realistic style - draw them looking more like real ponies than the plastic ones. First problem was that since I’m more familiar with horses than with ponies, they turned out a little less pony-like than I wanted. I’m still kind of happy with how they look, though, and I like how the poses and faces turned out.
I also wanted them to form a closed circle, like one wallscroll rather than six individual frames. I took three sheets of paper, folded them in half, and assigned each part to one pony. Except I wanted them to cross the frame on both sides to brake the borders. That was the second thing that didn’t work out - I only managed to have each pony cross ONE of their borders.
So I went with plan B and let their background props spread over the next two panels. And then I went completely overboard with the detail on that. And thus, coloring became a pain.Too much detail, too many colors… even just the flat coloring you see now took me several months (on and off)! So yeah, the plan about the detailed shading said good-bye pretty soon.”
