Description

It’s been a while that The Cutie Map has seen the light of the day, so it seems there’s nothing to talk about the episode. I think it has something to talk about. I really wanted to talk about it because I’ve never seen someone writing “I like it. However…”, so I’m gonna comment the next one. I don’t know how many downvotes I’m gonna receive just for doing this, maybe too much, but I’d like to comment this.

There are movies that people usually can’t stand because one scene or one detail, one detail that can ruin the movie according to them. Some people hated Prometheus because of the characters. Some people hated the Star Wars prequels because of the script, the CGI and the Lucas’ moves (I’m not surprised). Some people really hated Titanic because the romance story was so simple. With these examples you get the idea, because I’m gonna talk about one scene from the first part of The Cutie Map. I’m not gonna talk about the villain (who is not really interesting) or the music or the characters. I’m gonna talk about one scene, one moment that cringes me soooo much that prevents me to like this episode.

One thing that really shocked me is people really loves The Cutie Map episodes. I didn’t hear anything that started with “One thing I don’t like…”, so I’m gonna comment one scene which is a MAJOR problem. Here’s Pinkie Pie. This character never learns from her lessons (Baby Cakes, Pinkie Pride), and she is finally to getting to a point where she is extremely annoying. I’ll go with the fact that she can see the difference between those smiles…

…and this smile:

I’ll go with that. What I have a hard time going with is that Pinkie Pie, at the beginning of the episode, says that she has a bad feeling, because these smiles are fake. Later we see for the first time Starlight Glimmer and Pinkie Pie makes clear that she doesn’t trust her. Ok, that’s great, Pinkie. I’m starting to like you. But 10 minutes later, some ponies said that they misses their cutie marks and, later Pinkie Pie says that to Starlight. And guess what happens: Bad ending for everypony… except in Part 2.

This has to be the DUMBEST move I’ve ever seen from a character in a movie or TV show ever: Telling the villain that she doesn’t trust her and then she tells her a secret and finally everypony was caught. This scene makes Prometheus looks more realistic. There are some mistakes made by Pinkie Pie in the past, but this has to be her worst move.

I’ve seen this episode in April and, because of that, I was soooooo angry that I couldn’t control myself and I’ve made a rant video with no constructive commentary, but destructive, with curses, bad words, etc. A few days later I’ve seen that video again and I’ve deleted it because that wasn’t me, but I really wanted to talk about that scene because the writers made this. They made Pinkie Pie dumb because of the story, not because of the characters.

There’s a pair of rules from Pixar storytelling that says the following:

“You gotta identify with your situation/characters, can’t just write ‘cool’. What would make YOU act that way?”

“If you were you character, in this situation, how would you feel? Honesty lends credibility to unbelievable situations.”

The writers didn’t feel anything for Pinkie Pie. They thought that “she’s the comedian character, so we don’t have to write her right”.

But, hey! That’s ok! Because Pinkie Pie said later “Oops!”, menaing that she’s like an innocent girl that can’t understand the situation! Ok, No one can say that in an innocent way, no one.

I can understand that you don’t want Pinkie Pie to evolve, because you want the character in the way she is, you don’t want to destroy the essence of the character. What I don’t like is when the character is trying to learn something (Baby Cakes, A friend in Deed, Pinkie Pride) and the writers says: “Yeah, we have to do Season 5 and 6 and the movie, so let’s make her annoying”! That really annoys me.

Because of this, I think The Cutie Map was the worst double episode in the entire show. At first I was thinking about the Crystal Empire, but King Sombra at least had something interesting (although I didn’t like his words like “SLAVES” and “CRYSTAL”, I mean, nobody is a king with this dialogue) and Spike saved the entire kingdom in a great scene. I didn’t enjoy this episode for the reasons I’ve written here, and the boring design of Starlight.

About the scene, I’m not saying that Pinkie Pie has to be a perfect pony. A character with no flaws is a bad character. But the specific reasons why Pinkie Pie acted like that way makes me not to connect with her. A character fleshed out badly is a bad character.

I’m not saying that everyone is a sheep. I’ve just wanted to write something different that people really didn’t feel like this way, because I’ve never seen a comment that said “What I don’t like was…” or “I like it. However…”

Have a nice day everypony.
