So, this started out with my realization that I needed to rethink the way I draw Rarity. While there’s nothing particularly wrong with how I’ve drawn her so far, the style of her mane was cumbersome and uncomfortable for me to produce over and over, and I knew I couldn’t keep it up. So I tweaked her to better fit within my personal oeuvre. When doing some sketches of same I was afraid that she looked a bit too much like my Trixie, so I sketched headshots of the two of them side by side (verdict: it’s fine). Then I figured since I’ve drawn Rarity I might as well draw Sweetie, and the next thing I knew I’d done headshots of all the canon unicorn women that spend any decent time in Junior Gala (though there’s always a chance I might’ve missed somebody).
 
Rarity, Trixie, Sweetie, Lyra and Vinyl have appeared in my concept sketches before, but here we also have a few relative newcomers: CMC schoolmates Dinky and Pinchy, and Pinchy’s stepmom Colgate. Dinky, Pinchy and Sweetie are shown here as teens, Colgate is in her forties and the rest of them are in their thirties.
 
It would probably be even more educational if I did headshots for all the earth ponies and pegasi that appear in my story, but it might be sort of one-sided…as it turns out there are only a handful of pegasus mares compared to the loads and loads of earth ponies that’ve answered the casting call. Granted, I might do it anyway. Furthermore, maybe this will encourage me to focus up and draw the ladies’ hair on model once in a while (spoilers: not freakin’ likely).
