Fain, a changeling. Behind her is her ‘alter ego’/disguise (‘Saffron Shale’) that she wears in public. She had saved the wounded Hardtack and a relationship blossomed. Even when her real form is revealed, Hardtack still accepted her.

This is most likely painfully non-canon, at least as far as the original story goes, due to the lack of changelings at the time. I’ve seen subsequent stories dealing with various versions of the concept. shrugs

Hope it at least sounds interesting.
