Confectioner’s workshop? Making our own dessert sounds fun!
While given the opportunity to keep trying different things, your party decides to visit the Confectioner’s Workshop next. Just southwest of the town square, a colourful sign leads you inside what otherwise looks like a normal house.
As you enter, you are met by a spacious room halfway between a dessert-themed kitchen and a laboratory. Long tables divide the checkered floor into aisles, each more than wide enough to seat ponies on both sides. Atop the tables are evenly-spaced workstations, with bags of ingredients, pitchers of water and syrup, measuring cups and spoons, a burner, and some protective gear.
The walls, papered with raspberry pink patterns, are lined with dark chocolatey wood counters and cupboards with lighter brown doors. On the vanilla white countertops, rainbows of ingredients are neatly assorted and ready to be used, and hundreds of various sweets are displayed alongside the signatures of other festivalgoers.
After doing some last-minute cleanup, an adolescent filly trots over to greet each new arrival at the door.
Confectioner filly: “Come on in and take a seat! There’s plenty of room for everyone. One per station, please — I want everypony to make something they can share.”
As instructed, you take a seat next to Moonflower and Apple Basket, and chat for a minute or two until the activity starts.
Confectioner filly: “… I think that’s everypony. Okay! Hello, hello! My name’s Lollipop Frost, and today you’re gonna be making some candies! Exactly what you’ll be making is up to you, so I’ll keep this short and sweet.
The molds are over here. I’ve got all kinds of shapes and sizes you can use. The ones with the lines like this are for putting in sticks, in case you wanna make lollipops.”
Lollipop Frost holds up a few of the molds as she speaks to show them off, from simple circles and spheres to hearts, stars, and small fruits. You can’t think of a shape she doesn’t have — for better or for worse.
Lollipop Frost: “The big bottles in the back are the fruit-flavoured extracts, starting from here. I’ve got apple, banana, blackberry, blueberry, cantaloupe, cherry, coconut, cranberry, grape, kiwi, lemon, mango, orange, peach, pear, pineapple, pumpkin, raspberry, strawberry… (gasp) and watermelon. Those are all fruits, right?
And over here we’ve got the other popular flavour additives: butter, cinnamon, citric acid — if you like sour stuff —, ginger, honey, peppermint, rose, rum, salt, and vanilla. Did I miss anything? Well, if you need anything else, just ask — I’ve probably got it somewhere.”
To back up her words, the filly briefly opens the door to one of the cupboards, revealing what appears to be countless more ingredients stashed away inside.
Lollipop Frost: “Anyway — the smaller bottles in front are the colourings. They don’t taste like anything, but looks are important. Speaking of which, most of them look darker than they really are. You’re only gonna use a few drops per batch, so it’ll look brighter than that. I’ve got some red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, magenta and everything in between.
That’s shape, flavour, and colour. The last thing you need to decide on is texture. Do you wanna make something soft, like fudge? Something hard, like toffee? Or something in between, like gummies?
Once you kinda sorta know what you want, come get your molds, flavours and colours, then we’ll talk about the recipes. Okay? Okay!”
As you join the others in browsing the different molds and ingredients, you begin to think about what kind of sweet you would like to make.
