Cost is quite the tired argument, because the counter is always the same: even with a higher upfront cost, the cheaper games will make it cheaper overall in the long run always. Besides the versatility of a PC and the endless ocean of games available.
And if you got no money otherwise anyways: the ease of piracy. I know i did when i didn’t had a job, was just a wee teenager with a 2€ weekly allowance.

You don’t “invest” in a “custom made gaming pc” because spending any amount of money on a “custom made gaming pc” is a waste of money. You waste this money knowing that it’s a waste but it’ll bring you fleeting pleasure for years to come.
Some of us can’t afford to invest the money needed for a custom made gaming PC.
I wouldn’t mind a new PS2 and a GameCube.
