This picture takes place in an alternate Equestria where Nightmare Moon returned 800 years ago but was defeated by the bearers of harmony returning her back to princess Luna, but 500 years ago due to a disagreement over how to apply some new technology the Equestrians revived from an alien race in a radio transmission, Luna and a bunch of like-minded ponies use the technology and plans to construct a star-ship which takes Luna and her ponies to a new world. Now it’s the present day and Luna is finally returning but not in the way Celestia and the other ponies expect.
 
For when Luna and her ponies arrived on their new homeworld Selenia, a excavation team accidently set off an evolutionary crystal that was left by an ancient alien race, causing the ponies to evolve into anthro forms. The New Lunar Republic has since expanded outwards to about 350 star systems and it’s population now numbers in the hundreds of trillions.
 
Luna finally returns to Equestria, wanting to discuss with Celestia to let Equestria and the surrounding solar system, to be a protectorate of the NLR. However the negotiations get interrupted and Luna beams up to the ship and sees a massive fleet come towards Equestria. Which is a similar fleet of insectoid aliens that some of the NLR frontier worlds had described is coming to devour Equestria.
