Because this way they can skimp on the actual content, moving further into the direction of the (much cheaper to produce) interactive movies.
Don’t need to design a combat system, stats, balance, etc when your combat system boils down to “press X to not die”.
That’s bad too. What I was referring to specifically is stuff like “mash circle to open chest” and “mash x to lift fallen debris, so your character can go ‘whoa!’ when it falls back down behind them”. For a while there, every action game seemed to feel the need to slow things down by making you rotate a stick to crank up a gate, or mash triangle to pull a lever, because it’s got a two hundred pound pull for some reason.
I think it’s fine when done sparingly, but stuff like GTA 4/5’s “mash A to run” should never have made it past playtesting. Or anything that requires unreasonably fast button mashing, for that matter. Looking at you, Peace Walker.
