In Discord’s pocket chaos dimension he was lonely, one of his first uses of chaos magic was creating his very own “friend” / pet, this was before he mastered his magic, on his first try Bane was a little goofy. Nonverbal but still cuddly and intelligent.
After Discord left his dimension he was fucking THRILLED that birds exist. Guess what his favorite animal is?

Bane’s part of the Twicord Family, like a uncle of sorts. Twilight warmed up to him, but is still unnerved by how smart he is.

he has a special unique ability to absorb magic and turn it into food. comes in handy (Not actually, i headcanon Draconnequus not needing to eat food to survive BUT Discord just likes to for the hell of it.)
