Friendship Is Magic: The Next Generation begins thirty years after the birth of Princess Flurry Heart, and the story is… a bit darker and more complicated than My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic before it. It delves into the backstory around Alicorns, where they came from, why Discord is the only Draconequus, and who is the prisoner in the deepest darkest cell of the cosmic oubliette that is Tartarus…  
(And admittedly, FIM:TNG does take some liberties with the events of MLP:FIM, mostly in regards to Equestria Girls and all episodes after and including The Cutie Re-Mark. That will become more apparent when it comes to the character bios for Sunset Shimmer, Flash Sentry, Starlight Glimmer, and others.)
 
So anyway, here’s the star character of Friendship Is Magic: The Next Generation: Shamrock Apple, age 23, the daughter of Applejack & Twilight Sparkle, Princess of Friendship. She is the main caretaker of the orchards on all corners of Sweet Apple Acres, which have expanded to include pear trees now that the hatchet has been officially buried between the Apple and Pear families. Cultivars of all sorts are at the work, including one named after Shamrock’s great-grandmother. Speaking of whom, Great-Granny Smith is still alive and kicking. Well, less in the ‘kicking’ part, but she is still an active part in her great-grandchildren’s lives.
 
Shamrock’s special talent lies in cultivating magical properties in apples, enchanting them to carry additional features. She has dedicated an entire orchard of Sweet Apple Acres to experimenting with various strains of apples, in order to see if she can produce alternative properties in particular apples for discerning customers. Differing flavors, textures, apples which glisten like fields of snow under the light of particular stars, apples which grow to the size of watermelons and break easily into slices when struck… Her mother Applejack had been quite concerned when the little filly Shamrock took to tinkering with the odd apple that rolled off from the baskets set up beneath each tree during applebuck season, but when she saw the results and the appraisal of the Ponyvillagers, she could not say no to Shamrock. She still raises an eyebrow at the magic Shamrock pours into particular apple seeds she happens upon. Shamrock’s cousin Piñata Apple is eager to see her produce an actual piñata apple from her orchards that produces apple treats when burst, though Shamrock herself is skeptical that this could happen.

When Shamrock was born, she was a terribly tiny filly, smaller than most fillies were at birth. Applejack, who had carried her, was incredibly concerned that it was perhaps something in her. After Applejack first realized she was in love with the Princess of Friendship, she was initially adamant that Twilight would be the one to carry the child so that she herself could continue to work the orchards. She relented when Twilight explained the benefits of the child being carried in such a strong mare as Applejack. And though the farmer didn’t blame the Princess for their small and gangly daughter, she did coddle and cloister Shamrock Seedling for the longest time. Around the same time as Shamrock got her cutie mark, however, she began to shoot up like a sprout. She was merely a late-bloomer.
 
Shamrock Apple as a filly was bold and courageous, wishing to explore Ponyville and know more about its ponies, despite her mother Applejack’s desires to keep her safe on the farmlands. This has barely changed since she got her cutie mark and growth spurts, although she has learned to temper her enthusiastic greetings to avoid dipping into her mother Twilight Sparkle’s royal treasury for the hospital bills. She is loyal to a fault to the friends who she’s made, especially her cousins and her inner circle the children of Rainbow Dash & Fluttershy, Rarity & Pinkie Pie, Sunset Shimmer & Starlight Glimmer, and Flash Sentry & Sunburst. If you threaten or harm any of them, she will chase you to the ends of the earth with one thing in mind: payback.  
She refers to Applejack as Ma and Twilight Sparkle as Mom.
 
Shamrock’s coat comes the neckerchief worn by her great-grandfather Grand Pear, albeit heavily saturated and brightened. Her mane color comes from her great-grandmother Granny Smith’s coat color, and the stripes’ colors com from Flurry Heart’s magic aura and eyes. Her eyes come from Apple Bloom’s bow. Her cutie mark takes colors from the fill for Apple Bloom’s mane and Big Mac’s irises, the latter of which was darkened for easier visibility against her coat. The color of her hairbands comes from Twilight’s magic aura.
 
The rainbow streaks in her mane and tail, huh? Well, Shamrock and the other children of the Mane Six from Friendship Is Magic bear the mark of the Rainbow Power their mothers earned from the Tree of Harmony. The colors come from the coat colors of each of the Mane Six. She feels like she is quite capable of magic towards great harmony when she is close to the other three children of the Mane Six, but there is just something missing there. Do they need six to do this…?
 
Applejack first fell in love with Twilight shortly after the wedding between Shining Armor & Princess Cadance, but the sudden Alicorn transformation and subsequent coronation of Twilight halted Applejack in her tracks. Although she was prouder than she could ever say, the lofty title and greater stature of Twilight frightened her into silence. The crystal castle which sprouted from the Tree of Harmony further motivated her lack of movement there; Golden Oak Library was small and homey, a place she could almost imagine herself dwelling in. But the castle… high ceilings… long hallways… candelabras, chandeliers, and vases… all of it was just too much. With Twilight, however, the love developed slower. Even with her love of the magic of friendship, she was still not a social pony. But after she saw what became of Applejack in the alternate timeline where King Sombra was never stopped, Twilight felt something stirring in her heartstrings. After seeing that Starlight was on the rood to the correct path with the guidance of a fellow formerly misguided soul named Sunset Shimmer, she came to Applejack, and eventually they hit it off. To assuage Applejack’s concerns about their different domiciles, Twilight channeled her magic into the tree castle and produced a magical corridor through space that connected into the Sweet Apple Acres second-floor hallway, this corridor containing its own new rooms branching off in which Twilight & Applejack could bed together. This raised concerns from Flash Sentry, the Captain of the Dusk Guard, because leaving such an unguarded opening into her castle could allow entry from less friendly sorts of ponies. He was subsequently reminded that said intruders would first have to get past the entire Apple family.  
But then, everything changed when King Sombra returned and the Alicorns vanished.
