See, originally he was a fox named Mendax (Latin for “liar”, there’s still some cognates to that in Italian – e.g., “mentire”, “to lie”; “mendace”; “untrustworthy”). He would also have had a scorpion tail, though, which had a mouth and a mind of its own. Supposedly, this tail would have expressed his true motives while he did his con man act. To me, that gave the impression that when Mendax laid on the charm, the tail would whisper what he was really up to.
Man, his song number was great, but this might have made it even better.
On another note, I think I may have got a tad overambitious with those cape folds. I guess I’ve got some practice to make in drawing cloth in my near future.
