Description

Another of the past cast from avatarjk137’s pony blog, Red Velvet Recalls.
Ember Heart Ember Heart had an obsession with fire, her natural talents being to summon it with her magic. To her fire was the most beautiful thing. And the world grew more and more ugly to her until she couldn’t take it anymore and HAD to put the world on fire to get rid of the ugly.
She caught herself in a barn she put on fire while trying to hide from the royal guard. Despite that, she still vows to put the world on fire should she have the chance. You’re all so much more beautiful in flames…
The biggest challenge in this was to draw the burned version of her. Maybe I should had made her look more scorched? Never fully hit just how it looked in my mind, but Avatar still approves of the result. Another one where I managed to get the colours right in first try, same with the sketch turning out right in first try if avatarjk137’s approval is an indicator.
Enjoy!

Ember Heart Story:
Ah, yes, I noticed that as well. Well, on to the cautionary tale of Ember Heart.
She and I could’ve been separated at birth, I’ve heard, for the way our early lives mirror each other. I was born the only earth pony to a unicorn family, and she was born the only unicorn in an earth pony family. Ember Heart grew up on the mean streets of Fillydelphia, rough and untamed and beautiful, her white coat and brilliant orange mane mud-splattered. Her family didn’t have two bits to rub together. Ember Heart was smart and not unkind, but she loved things as beautiful as herself - mostly the kinds of things you need money to buy, but not fire. Fire is free, and she could summon it from the time she was a filly. Her fire, she says, was beautiful and harmless - as long as she wished it to be.
Ember Heart, like myself, learned the trade of potions, brewing them over her flames - but she specialized in recreational potions. They’re nasty things with nasty side effects, but they were worth money and she could sell them to afford beautiful things. And she eventually learned to brew ones that let her just sleep and see beautiful things that the waking world didn’t offer. One day, this smart, curious pony started to create her own recipes, and she created something with a deep, fiery lustre - like liquid sunlight, she said. Since it was hers and beautiful, she sampled it first. And soon she found there was none left for anypony else.
For days afterwards, nothing was beautiful to Ember Heart, except for one thing - her old love, fire. She just wanted to spread the flames everywhere. Anything, anypony she saw - it seemed hideous if it wasn’t on fire. It grew unbearable, and soon she couldn’t be bothered to keep her fire harmless. She just had to burn everything. And when guards chased her into a barn full of hay bales, well, she had to burn that too. She almost died that night. Her injuries were terrible and magically exacerbated, and there’s only so much the doctors could do for her.
Now Ember Heart is down here with the rest of us. She’s always kind of out of it because she has to be kept on so many painkilers - withholding them would be torture for her. She can hardly walk, can’t raise her voice, can hardly see. She has to be kept in magical bandages all over because her cursed burns reject skin grafts. Only a few strands of her beautiful fur and mane have ever grown back, and her hooves cracked in the heat of her flames that night.
But her magic is still valid. It’s there, at the edge of your awareness. When Black Egg and White Snow taunt her, I can feel my teeth buzz with her irritation. And she’s told us that if the anti-magic countermeasures on her cell were to fail, she’d burn down this whole castle, stone or no stone, and she’d rise from the ashes as a beautiful phoenix.
