Mulberry fashions a torch out of the available materials. She tears a long stretch of cloth from her torn dress and wraps it around some of the old firewood. If she had something to soak the cloth in, or if the wood wasn’t so dry, it would help. For now she doubts it would last very long. Maybe two or three minutes. Perhaps time to light it, get down the ladder, and have a few moments to look around.
 
She manages to get it lit with some matches she had from Antoine’s, and she shines it down the hole. It looks like it opens up into a big cave, but she can’t see much else from here.
 
She quickly climbs down the ladder and has to take a step back and gasp at what she sees. It’s a fleshy hill of giant eyes, teeth, horns, and wings. They all spasm and writhe when the light shows on them, but thankfully it remains silent. She thinks she would have fainted on the spot if it had.
 
Around the edge of the massive thing are runes. She recognizes the pattern as the same one that was holding in Mr. Peacock from outside River’s door.
 
She also notices something among the horns. It’s a similar shape, but not the same. It sort of looks like a rod topped with a unicorn horn. Around this thing there are runes as well, but she can’t make them all out from this angle.
 
The torch starts to run down, so she makes her way over to the ladder, since the light from above is the only source now.
