I’ve been wanting to give Rowena’s pony design a bit of a redesign for a while, so I ended up using that for the new cover motive. Not much of a difference, I have already been drawing her a bit with the wing tip feathers being blue instead of green. The one major change being I wanted to give her tail feathers too. Always thought that was a cute detail on some pegasus designs out there.
I like to think of it as a breed trait relating to ancestors from back before the Three Tribes began mixing together. Like unicorns with classic traits like the lion tail and split hooves. Some families kept these traits by refusing mix breeding, while in some cases like with Rowena here they are simply a recessive gene that pops up now and again every or so other generation.
I’m also trying to draw her wings bigger than I started with, while both being a style change but also another breed trait in Rowena’s case. She’s a long distance glider, big wings to keep gliding for longer time to preserve energy on long treks. She doesn’t travel much herself, but her father makes use of this wing type he passed to her. She’s not very fast, not super agile, but sure can fly long distances if she wants.
That’s just that note I wanted to add on that. Been fun pulling out the colouring pencils again for a bit. The pose took a few tries, I wanted something to show a sort of flight (in this case dive) while also able to show the tail end. Not sure if I got the right length or shape for her tail feathers yet, for the intended purpose of long distance gliding. I’m no bird expert.
Anyways, enjoy!
