Right you are. Things were only compounded with the equestria girls events where he became a literal pet.

Spike really was struggling under that horrible preconceived notion of twilight’s, wasn’t he?

I’m surprised at how consistent G4 was on that point. Back in season 1, Spike acted out and finally ran away in Owl’s Well. Twilight could only see his anxiety over being replaced in terms of his ‘job’.

This is harsher in hindsight for a couple reasons.

1: The comics that gave Spike the “mama twilight” backstory show her abusing the everliving shit out of him because he’s an infant who has needs.

2: Sparkle’s Seven confirms that Twilight never saw Spike as anything more than a pet until he outwitted everyone else and won the Hard-Won Helm of the Sibling Supreme, which also showed that he was joint raised by Celestia and Twilight Velvet.
