Showa is the reign of Emperor Hirohito and corresponds to the rise of fascism in Japan. Hesei is what came after and Reiwa is the current era.
This is the Meiji era empire, established by Emperor Meiji. It lasted until 1912, when the Taisho era began. Showa didn’t come about until after the Taisho era. That Derpi thread getting shitty about Emperor Meiji for Hirohito’s crimes is beyond ridiculous.
This picture’s comment section on Derpi is an embarrassment. This is clearly Meiji era Japan and the retards over there spent the thread reeeeing about WW2. Nobody there seems to know that Meiji era Japan and Showa era Japan were two different empires ruled by different governments according to different principles.
Also, this description is awful. The Meiji Restoration and the Qing Self-Strengthening Movement bore no resemblance to each other. And the Beiyang army, far from being the strongest force on Earth, was bottom tier in the power rankings. The weakest great powers of Europe, namely the Ottomans and Italy, would have handled the Beiyang army with little effort. The idea that the late Qing Dynasty was a rising power had its roots in propaganda, not reality. The Beiyang Army was just one provincial army, even if it was the best one in China, and was used for policing the endemic internal rebellions that plagued the Qing. It wasn’t in any way equivalent to a centralized national army and was never meant to confront such enemies unsupported. A large part of why China lost that war so one-sidedly was the fractious nature of its provincial militaries. Neighboring provinces refused to send military support to fight the Meiji and the Beiyang alone had no chance against the power of a national army.
