Description

Notes about the design/character:

-Hawk Eye was a developed character long before Turquoise was. There was once a family where Zephyr and Limestone had one son, with no thought of giving them more children. But then I was like, “what if he had a sister who was tougher than him?” and Turquoise was born!

-Back in my earliest vision of her, even before I told anyone my idea to give Hawk a sister, she was to be a 15-year-old earth pony. That version is not included here because I never actually drew her nor did I have a color scheme for her.

-@glamgoria-morose gave me the idea to put her in the military, and he was the one who came up with her name (including the nickname “Ducky”). Basically, he was a big contributor to her earliest stages of development.

-@glamgoria-morose also came up with the idea to ship Turquoise with Mel and we got attached. It happened while he was making crackship babies for the Kindverse, and he told me he shipped MelQuoise for real after making the foal that would later become Holly. He came up with their backstory as a couple and everything!

-Unlike some of my other OCs whose designs were constantly evolving and went through many stages, Turquoise looked the same for a long time. However, the “pink-haired female Zephyr” look never sat right with me, so I got help from @Cascayd in redoing her palette just last January. Now she’s a better mix between her parents.

-Turquoise’s personality never changed over the course of her development; it just developed more. While some of my other OCs went through major personality overhauls, Turquoise is and always has been the tough, tsundere warrior she started out as. There’s just a lot more to her now; she has feelings, a backstory, and strengths and weaknesses that take her beyond “military rock farmer”.

-Like with Galaxy, killing off Flash did wonders for Turquoise’s character development. I don’t really remember how the idea came to be that she was the “killer”, but I know it had something to do with both her and Galaxy being in the military. It’s brought a whole new dimension of moral complication for Turquoise that may not have existed otherwise.

-My decision to make Turquoise blind in her left eye came from the idea that as a warrior, she would surely have some battle scars. Making her lose a wing would have been too cruel, so I took out her eye instead. It wasn’t until the conflict over Flash’s death developed more that Galaxy became the cause of that injury.

-Turquoise’s divorce from Mel came from the notion that Holly being with Parasite and running away with her would create tension between the two mothers, given how stubborn they both are. I was like, “What if they considered divorce?” and then, “WHAT IF THEY ACTUALLY DIVORCED?” And thus an entire story arc was born. I spent a lot of time unsure whether they should get back together or not (part of me wanted to save my precious ship) but the feedback from my watchers has helped me make a decision on which direction to go in.

-TL;DR: Turquoise Edge was a minor character, almost an add-on of sorts…until she wasn’t.
