I think the brony community has pretty much come to a consensus that the official G4 toys put out by Hasbro are… less than optimal. This is where my opinion comes in.Comparing the G4 toys to my previous collection of G3 toys, I’ve come to the realization that G3 had much better if not the best official figures as far as quality, looks, and accuracy and even more so, variety.I just bought myself a Crystal Princess Celebration edition Rainbow Dash. The figure itself looks nice: the colors are accurate (even though the hair isn’t completely right, but think about it. You can only have so many colors of brushable hair before they meld together.) and it seems durable, but I was pretty disappointed by her accessories. A purse? Seriously? and a mask, which was made out of PAPER.Looking around of course, the majority of the other characters were colored horribly wrong. Pink Twilights, Pink Celestias, Pink Lunas, Dark pink Cadences… you get the picture.G3 was actually accurate in coloring their characters. If I wanted to get a Sunny Daze, I could go confidently knowing the toy would actually look like the Sunny Daze from the movies. (Yes, Sunny Daze was one of my favorites). If this Rainbow Dash had been made with the same quality as G3, the mask would likely have been made out of a durable plastic. Sure there’s no guarantee that she wouldn’t have come with a purse, but the point is, the products were thought out much better and much more time was put into them.Don’t even get me started on variety though. Not counting the blindbags, Hasbro ONLY sells the main characters. (I think Lyra exists, but I’m not sure). Back in the G3 days (before all that “Core 7” Crap), there were soooo many characters to choose from. Even characters that were never in the series. Just random characters that looked nice. Yes, the main ones existed, but they had a kind of rareness to them which was kind of fun. You could brag to all your friends that you “actually HAVE Rainbow Dash”.I’m not trying to say that G3 was better than G4 in every single way, but as far as the official Hasbro-produced toys and merchandise go, it absolutely was.
