This week’s new protege is an earth fluffy called Wayne. At first he may seem like a normal fluffy pony with no sign of abuse or mistreatment, but when you hear him coughing his tiny lungs out you definitely know something’s wrong.
Wayne’s ex-owner was a heavy smoker living in a single room apartment. In his own words he took Wayne from the streets “because I wanted one of dem fluffy things and strays are free”. After one year of breathing tobacco smoke, Wayne acquired chronic bronchitis. Every morning we have to replace his bed sheets, because the last night’s ones are covered in phlegm. Wayne’s sense of smell seems to have been dulled to the point of no longer functioning. His eyes seem to water excessively, presumably from a year of living in an environment of constant irritation. Furthermore, try as we might, the smell of cigar smoke will not leave his fluff. Care must be taken to keep him separate from the fluffies who had abusive owners that smoked, as the smell of his fluff may trigger a reaction.
It’s unlikely that Wayne will live for long but we’ll do our best at the shelter to keep him in the best of conditions until then.
