Page 505 - Versus the World

In a very narrative and character focused game, the chance that one player might get sidelined increases. Not everyone gets to be the party face, of course, but sometimes it happens to one particular player a bit more than you want it to. One method to counter this is to give that sidelined player their own special mini-session that has an impact on the campaign.

DM: That accounts for Twilight, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, Applejack, and, uh… Miss-Not-Appearing-In-This-Session. How about Fluttershy? What’s her costume like?
Fluttershy: Um… Well… Actually… She’s going to stay at home. For the night.
DM: …Wha?
Fluttershy: Well, I mean, I know Fluttershy is just a character, and there’s an extent to which she and I have differences… but I think we’d agree that Nightmare Night is… just… too much. So no visitors, no scares, no pranks, just safety at home with my animals. That’s… how I normally do Halloween…
DM: <sigh> I was hoping I wouldn’t make you a spectator two sessions in a row…
Fluttershy: I’m sorry.
DM: It’s okay. We’ll figure something out. Actually… Yeah, we’ll figure something out.
