Description

Ladies and Gentlemen, may I introduce you to my first ever My Little Pony; Friendship is Magic OTP: Derpy and Doctor Whooves!

That’s right, this adorable little animation mistake and TV show parody were the first couple I wholeheartedly shipped (as far back as season 2), and are possibly the characters to first introduce me to the concept of shipping ( as prior to them I only rooted for canonically established characters)!

Now I’m sure you’re wondering, if this is the case, then why have I waited this long to introduce them to the KOPverse? Well, since they’re the ‘background’ characters to the show, I have them ranked as a secondary/background ship. So I ‘had’ to wait until the main characters were introduced before I could shine the spotlight on them. And, knowing me and my flippant motivation and schedule, I just took me a while to get to them. That doesn’t mean I ship them any less than I did back then, tho! The comic dubs “Lovestruck Derpy”, songs like “Nyan Nyan” and “Hello My Ditzy”, as well as other animations, fan art, and fan fics devoted to these two have forever cemented this iconic couple in my heart.

But you’re not here to read me rant about my nostalgic past. No, I’m sure you’re here in order to find out how these two fit into the KOPverse and what complex and detailed romance I spent waaaay to much time constructing for them. Well, I’m sorry to disappoint, but this isn’t going to run the way my TrixiexFlim dump did. All I’ve got for you today are some relatively unorganized notes and head canons below that will hopefully do the job.

Don’t take the briefness of it the wrong way- I could write a five page essay on these two. But that would take time to write and that’s something I’m a little short on, so this will have to do for now. Hope you’ll enjoy my summarized thoughts on the muffin mare and her Time Lord. Wink/Razz

Characters and Relationships:

With her unforgettable eyes and ditzy nature, Derpy has quite the reputation in Ponyville. Aside from her clumsy, yet sweetly saccharine personality, she’s most notably known for her track record of job’s she’s been ever so conveniently let go from a few months into it. As a simple mare, Derpy’s aspirations amount to getting enough money to live on and seeing how many clouds she can spot in a day. Because of this she doesn’t really mind job hopping (albeit she does feel bad for the damage she leaves in her wake) and assuming it was a normal phenomenon, was content to do so forever. That is, until she landed a job as the mailmare. Derpy doesn’t believe she has a ‘calling’, but if she does have one, this was it. The job was simple, easy to understand, a way for her to see her friends and neighbors, and aside from a few minor issues, was the first job where she hadn’t set something on fire. After reaching her six month period, Derpy not only broke her record for holding a job, but she’s also gain a new reputation in Ponyville- as the town mailmare.

Doctor Whooves, on the other hoof, is a lesser known face in the little hamlet, mostly because he rarely shows it. Unless he’s out running errands or taking a coffee break to clear his head, the Doctor holes himself up in his spaciously cluttered basement. No one knows quite what he does down there or even how his unique creations function. All they have to go off of are the billows of smoke from the windows, shouts of ‘eureka’ heard two blocks down, and the unhealthy amount of tea seen shipped to his doorstep. As a result, the rumors and stories spun about him tend to get pretty imaginative. Foals whisper to friends that he’s mad scientist who captures innocent victims and tortures them for his experiments, to which the adults reprimanding explain he’s just ‘odd stallion’, while in their minds dance visions of killer contraptions and the return of the pony plague. While these wild accusations are obviously false, Doctor has more important things to worry about than unsavory reputation he’s built- like science. His life passion and all absorbing hobby; Doc first devoted him to the pursuit of knowledge after his family was taken from him at an early age by a magical catastrophe. Unsatisfied with the explanation of “magic, duh”, he harnessed his brimming curiosity and potential to explain the unexplainable via natural means. Did his passion become an uncontrollable obsession? Maybe. Does his experiments sometimes cross the line a bit? Possibly. But he has a doctorate in science which makes him a professional that obviously has it all under control so there absolutely no reason at all to worry nope sir-y! Of course, he can’t make a living of it (yet), so his day job consists of editing highschool geometry and chemistry textbooks- but other than that there is nothing distracting him from his life’s calling.

That is, aside from Derpy.

Doc first met the crossed-eye pegasus during her first round as mailmare, as Derpy made it her goal to introduce herself to every house she delivered to- even odd cottages with ‘mad-scientist’ rumored to be within. The disheveled stallion, thinking it was his weekly tea delivery come early, was taken back by Derpy’s bubbly hello and the muffin she passive-aggressively presented three inches from his muzzle. He retreated back inside as soon as he could, relieved to have escaped- gulp- social interaction. To his dismay; however, Derpy kept up her routinely greetings and afternoon chat. While they annoyed him at first, he soon grew to tolerate them and eventually even enjoy them (a little). Somehow, the ditzy mare with her wonder at everything and judgment-free mindset, wormed her way through Doctor’s thick skull and into his tw- one, normally functioning heart. Before he knew it, they were chatting at his usual cafe over muffins and mulberry tea and testing out Doc’s latest inventions, often leading to plenty of sitcom shenanigans. As months rolled by, the Doctor realized how much this simple, yet endearing mare had become a part of his life. And for the first time he felt something he hadn’t in years- an intimate connection to another pony.

Just like he did with everything in his life, Doctor pursued his feelings with a passion and an open mind. He didn’t know the first thing about romance or mares, but then again, neither did Derpy. Still, she was willing to tread the uncharted waters with him, since she’d been secretly haboring strong feelings for a while now. Their ‘dating’ was about as smooth as chunky peanut butter, but it didn’t make the taste of the PBJ any less sweet. It was clear to Derpy that she’d never find such an intelligent, open minded (and unpatronizing) stallion like Doc, who in turn couldn’t imagine being with anypony other than his caring-to-the-core, supportive marefriend. It made perfectly logical sense to Doc to stop wasting time and tie the knot already, and it only took a muffin with a ring inside to persuade Derpy to think so too. Everypony was a bit surprised to hear the friendly, neighborhood mare married the local mad scientist, but they’d heard of weirding things so they simply accepted it and moved on. Meanwhile Derpy moved in with her dearest Doctor and after giving it the proper sprucing up made his dusty cottage feel like an actual living space for the first time. They both live contented lives together, with Derpy as the bread maker and Doc as the stay at home dad with their bright-minded son, Chronos.
