Think about that. Women ALWAYS worked. Even going back to the middle ages or whatever, aside from doing household chores, women would have a side hustle. They’d knit stuff and sell it at the market or sell vegetables they grew in the garden. Some of the more fecund women would nurse the children of nobles, because the queen’s tiddies are too precious to be touched by a baby’s mouth.

In the Industrial Revolution factory owners wanted to employ women and children because they were smaller and could fit into all the nooks and crannies of the machines. Men were also members of trade guilds and had to be paid a certain amount, so they would hire women and children so they could undercut their pay. That’s why mandatory schooling was invented. Organized labor in the 19th and early 20th century waged real war, with guns and people dying, to get kids out of factories so men could make more money.

The one time when we didn’t have a large number of women working was after the Second World War when the US bombed every other nation into smithereens and a single man could now afford to pay for a wife, four kids, a dog, a GI Bill subsidized house, two cars, and a vacation every year. And because household chores were now automated, women sat around being bored and divorces skyrocketed.

Even in the 20s and 30s, and in rural areas into the 60s even, housework was manual labor. Clothes had to be sewn by hand, now they’re bought on the Internet. Clothes had to be washed by hand, with harsh chemicals that rotted flesh on corrugated scrub boards, and that took all day, now you can go to the laundromat and do a month’s worth of laundry in an afternoon. Food was grown in a garden, and people had chicken coops even in cities, and they baked their own bread and preserved vegetables and meats, now you go to the store and it’s ready made, or if you’re rich you get meal prep kits off the Internet and that only takes minutes. You’re not spending four hours a day baking bread and harvesting eggs and slaving away over a hot stove. Floors had to be scrubbed by hand, now robots clean them for us while we’re away.
