I’ve been drawing a lot of pony heads lately in the same angle, and thought I’d do some simple n easy expression practice with Greywind. Nothing too crazy. Sort of a redraw of this:
It’s also kinda nice to see the way my art has changed and developed over an 11 month period. I’ve always really struggled with “style,” but I think I’m finally developing one of my own that I’m proud of and happy with! Anyway, some actual notes about Windy herself
- Greywind’s wings have always been really small, much smaller than that of her siblings. She actually has the smallest wingspan in the entire Dash family. However, a pegasus’ wing size do not determine flight ability. Like all ponies, pegasi use magic. Their magic is used for flight. Take Bulk Biceps for example- he’s a bodybuilder with really tiny wings, but he’s got enough flight skill to qualify as a rookie Wonderbolt. This is because it’s more so his magic that powers his flight. His actual wings do play a role in flight, but it’s not as large as the physical magic. Scootaloo, in comparison, has a magical deformity. She’s basically an earth pony trapped in a pegasus body, so she doesn’t have enough pegasus magic to use her wings for flight. Without magic, it would take wings as large as a building for a pegasus to naturally sustain flight. This is why, when Discord and Tirek alter a pony’s internal magic, unicorns lose the ability to cast spells, pegasi lose the ability of flight, and earth ponies lose the ability of strength and harvest. Long story short, Greywind’s got relatively small wings but she’s a powerful flier. You can sort of see her wing size compared to her siblings in this drawing here
- Greywind has a lightning bolt tattooed on her shoulder. Every member of the Dash family (starting with Rainbow Dash’s parents) has one, including Clear Sky! Windy’s is the largest and the most visible. In her later adulthood, she gets a sleeve tattooed on the same leg, which mimics the leg markings both Rainbow Dash and Clear Sky have.
- Greywind looks like the least like her mother Clear Sky, and the most like her mother Rainbow Dash. She’s got a very chill relationship with Dash- they’re more like friends than mother and daughter, and it’s actually a super healthy relationship. Clear Sky babies her a bit more. Being the “family over friends” pony growing up, she stuck by her parents’ side all the time and developed a really deep bond with the both of them.
- Windy’s a sloucher and she’s got raging RBF so she always looks super unapproachable, but in reality she’s just chilling.
