Nightlight is attached to things that give her a sense of stability and predictability. A book she knows and loves is like a security blanket for her. Her big brother, White Night, is one of few people who can do the same.
Nightlight feels safe in her big brother’s arms. White Night teaches her that the world was made for friendship. The sense of safety she finds with him helps her find the courage to reach out and make friends.
The thought of needing friends has been a scary concept for Nightlight. Making friends can be one of the messiest tasks. Moreover, unpredictability can be especially tough for those on the autism spectrum (cf. this article: https://neurodevelopmentcenter.com/bad-surprises-make-good-treatment-for-aspergers-syndrome/). As Nightlight learns to appreciate her brother’s patience and loyalty, she learns to enjoy showing these same qualities for others.
