I think Discord was a great villain lol. I have mixed feelings about everything that came after, he never felt so much redeemed as much as a dick that the ponies just started tolerating or liking despite nearly every character trait being negative tbh.  
Tirek was just extremely cool, though I haven’t seen his season 9 appearance.  
Nightmare Moon was great in design, backstory, and concept but she what, stuck a thorn in a creature’s paw, cut a moustache and created a group of Wonderbolts impersonators?  
Sombra was pretty rad.  
Trixie did nothing wrong until she was driven out of town for the crimes of being a showpony lmao.  
Flim and Flam have probably one of the best songs in the show.  
Tempest Shadow has a great design and backstory, and feels like an actual threat, but her redemption felt kinda cliche, though the movie in general isn’t something I like for it’s writing as much as it’s art style and animation.  
The bug queen is probably my favorite villain, a good mix of cool and disturbing.Love her design, love her voice, love the whole changeling concept and how FiM mixed it with bugs.

Sombra got less screen time than fucking Gak.
 
Tirek was seriously nerfed in season 9. So was the Tree of Harmony. Tirek absorbed all the magic of four alicorns and discord all by himself in season 4 and rainbow power, not even the elements, rainbow power was able to defeat him in an instant without even trying. Then in season 9 some ass pull bullshit destroyed the Tree, which up to that point was totally omnipotent, and then Tirek, Crysalis, and Crazy Glue sharing the same amount of magic Tirek had alone earlier, are still afraid to use all the magic because it’s too much to handle?
 
Late season writers obviously had never watched the earlier seasons. They also had significantly less talent when it comes to mythology, because they took the great mythology of the early seasons, shat all over it, put it in a blender, and then served it up to drug addled fans who were only looking for “fun”.

Thank you. She was just doing her job and everypony shat all over her. Trixie literally did nothing wrong. She was made into a designated villain for no reason. I harped all over this when the episode came out. Everypony bent over backward to give Gilda eight second chances, but they were rude to Trixie from the beginning. And when Dumb and Dumber nearly destroyed the town and got everypony killed Twilight rewarded them! That pissed me off.
 
I hated every single episode Flim and Flam were in.

Boast Busters is a really weak episode in that regard, yeah. Trixie put on a show and was treated like she was some kind of monster for it lol. She was rude as hell to Snips and Snails, but at the same time, she was having to put up with Snips and Snails lmao. Then when the idiots brought a rampaging giant monster bear to town, she actually did try to stop it, and when she realized she couldn’t, she promptly stated so and pointed out what should have been obvious to everybody, her stage act was an act.  
It’s a really weird episode with a completely broken moral attached to it that might have worked if she were malicious, or if she weren’t literally a show pony and thus had no reason to act like a braggart.
 
I stopped watching after season 5, tbh. I still plan to watch past that, but really my love for the series is mostly for seasons 1 and 2, and select episodes that came later. The manga, and the very very early IDW comics are good too.

Past season 4 the only thing worth seeing really is Rock Solid Friendship. Everything else is just “Oh look, it’s ponies! I used to watch that years ago and now that there’s a quarantine this channel is free for three months and I can watch something other than C-Span, Arthur (only the early episodes, before the show became “very special”), and Little House on the Prairie! Isn’t that quaint.”

Something that is often forgotten about Discord: He’s Discord. Not making sense is kinda his thing. So in reality, He knows how to be nice, but he chooses to be a dick as it makes less sense.

Totally. I still prefer his Season 3 appearance because of his awesome and incredible plan, but I’m just happy that mah boy Sombra managed to talk, with a voice that IMO fits him.

Here’s a fun question: whose redemption arc was worse: Discord or Starlight?

Repeating villain are inevitably disappointing.  
Starlight beat this fate because she was given a plot-pull face-heel turn and got to join the protagonist gang before she became a useless villain.  
Chrysalis almost escaped this fate: her return was successful (even if the episodes were weaker than her debut: the fact that it was established that season finales have extra-strong antagonists and that changelings exist removed any element of surprise that her debut episodes used so well). That one episode where she makes a fake M6 openly acknowledges that she had fallen far from her peak power rather than return her as “back and badder than ever (even though we all know she’ll lose again anyway)”. Then they made her coordinate with other villains and I can’t comment on the specifics of that because I had stopped watching the show by then.

Writing episodes that don’t connect with the moral they’re supposed to convey is a staple for the show.

Even though I like her, it has to be Starlight. Discord’s was done far better.

My favourite villain is certainly Nightmare Moon. Her story nicely combines the personal with the mythological; and hers was the most interesting alternate timeline in the season 5 finale.

As a Starlight Stan, I have to say it’s her redemption but unlike Discord, her post redemption life wasn’t garbage.

Also, I felt that a lot of writers didn’t understand Discord after his ‘reformation’, like he was still a villan, just one they’d rather have in their tent pissing out instead of in someone elses tent pissing in.
 
Some writers I don’t think had the imagination to write a character like Discord that can do anything and didn’t understand the dynamic of haveing an evil manipulator working for the good guys.

I’d say if you take Trixie’s return as revenge for her unfair treatment then she had a good run and justification (sorta). Although I guess that wasn’t the point.
 
Tempest Shadow. @Jomok0 said it best - an actual threat, the film had this sense of urgency to it. It made sense why Twilight got angry, but that ‘friends’ insult was way out of character, even if she immediately realised it.

I liked Chrysalis. She was what made me want to check out the whole show. She’s got a unique design, intresting powers,and a genuine grievance that I can’t agree with but I can sympathize.  
And Cozy Glow because she’s cute and fascinating,why is she so bent on power? It can’t be purely Tirek’s influence. I was hoping we’d see some clever outcome, unfortunately she just gets frozen. I was thinking maybe she was actually some ancient creature Celestia and Luna fought eons ago and this filly was just a disguise. Or possibly she was a reborn creature,like Demon King Piccolo and normal Piccolo.  
I was pretty disappointed with her outcome.

Nah, its much simpler than that. Discord can have anything he wants by snapping his fingers, people need adversity and struggle to grow, develop empathy and build good character. Look at these reality TV shows about the children of millionaires that are lazy, selfish, spiteful, vapid air heads who are only intrested in themselves and their own pleasure. Thats where Discord comes from, total self involvement and a primal desire to cause ‘chaos’.
 
Discords arc should of been Fluttershy teaches him to appreciate the company of others, Pinkie teaches him how he can use chaos in a way people wouldn’t mind or even appreciate. Episode of Discord being his villainous manipulative self to teach some asshole an overdue lesson.
 
Bigmac (as a stand in for Applejack) teaches him to put others needs before his own and Spike (as a stand in for Twilight) teaches him the value of hard work. Twilights kingdom, which is the same as it was but this time Discord knows Tirek will betray him and that he will lose all his friends, but he takes a dive to push Twilight into ceasing her destiny.
 
Discord, Spike and Bigmac Goodness for a bit. I have vastly different ideas of how the show should have ended, but the end of Discords Arc is when he decides being all powerful has gotten stale and decided to put aside his power for a while to experience life as a mortal, besides he doesn’t really need it anymore.

Yeah I don’t think it’s about not making sense, I think Discord is just a dick because he’s just a dick. In so far as I watched, he didn’t really have an arc as much as he went from being a villainous dick to a much less villainous dick that had a thing for a yellow horse. So I guess he’s relatable as a fellow dick that has a thing for a yellow horse, but I feel he could’ve been handled much better lmao
