I’ve been seeing a lot of comment about weather or not ponybooru should have a discord server as well and thought it would be useful to have a place for all of those comments for site administrators.

I don’t think it should, especially if we end up getting an on-site means of quick communication like a little chat window or something. I believe having discussions about the site, off-site, disconnects you from the site itself and the user base that don’t use the Discord channel.

Certainly not. Discord is part of what led other boorus and communities past the event horizon of pointless admin drama and circlejerking cliques.

If you do really want a real-time chat system with the community (because let’s face it, forum posting has as many weaknesses as strengths), I’ve seen other users suggest a browser IRC window on the site. That way, it’s still on-site and there isn’t as much probability of what mentioned prior happening.

On the other hand, it is one more extra space for moderators to patrol for spam or goons.

IRC tends to have the same problems as discord though, only difference being less people use it, but I know from experience that IRC has the same problems when it comes to circlejerking and drama

I’m on Discord all the time, but I’m still very much against this. It would just cause a circlejerk and Discord drama that nobody wants. If anyone wants to talk, that’s what the forums are for.

I think having all discussion take place on forums encourages people to put more thought into what they say, which is good for all kinds of discussions. What they post is also visible forever rather than being lost in the flow of conversation, meaning they have to make what they say count a lot more than in a chat room or similar.

An IRC box on the website would at least ensure conversation remains on-site, and people don’t have to sign up to a separate service or go somewhere else to talk to people.
Mind you we’re talking about an embedded shoutbox right here on ponybooru.org. I don’t doubt that insular IRC channels could breed circlejerking similar to insular Discord “servers” (which are really just channels).

I’m of the opinion that moderators & the like should, as much as possible, keep their activity to the site they’re overseeing. Even discounting the fiasco of the last month, I’ve seen on plenty of occasions moderation teams grow distant from the groups & sites they oversee, and even from one another as they break up into little factions that only talk amongst themselves and jerk users around in a dozen different directions. It’s fine if they have their own little forum that only they can post in but they need to be here, and for transparency’s sake such a forum should still be visible to users.

No discord. It may have seemed like a good idea for Derpi to make one back when the app was in its infacy, but now we’re wiser and know that, simply put, it kills things.

In light of what’s come out of Derpi, I hope the staff is reconsidering their consideration of a Discord server. It’s a lot worse over there than I would have been capable of imagining.

Yes, but only if the Mod chat is publicly Viewable. (Only Read for Public Members not write obviously) No more circle jerking of Mods.

I haven’t made an account yet here (still working out the name), but I want to state that I am strongly opposed to an official Discord. Over the past number of years, it’s been shown time and time again that when a group in one place (like a website or on a forum) starts a discord, things almost always go badly for that group.

The problem seems to come in when the chatroom becomes more of a hangout place than a customer help line. Whatever the exact causes, and however it really happens, the correlation between a community starting up a Discord server, and the destruction of that community are too strong to ignore. Discord servers only seem to work when the community is a Discord community from the start.

I think that it would be best if we had it, but reserved it moreso for site-related concerns, like appeals.

@Zaknel
That’s what the old IRC chatrooms were for. Then they migrated to Discord, with it’s permanent user identity and list of joined servers. Then the Discord turned into a hangout place for general conversation, with side chatrooms.

The problem isn’t just the way it starts. I just don’t think that we can restrict things to just being something like a user help line for things like appeals. It’s too easy for things to go off the rails.

That’s not necessarily true every discord server I’ve seen large and small that have all failed for one reason, bad moderators, usually because their overzealous, and groups that start on discord are typically successful because they basically made up of friends and everybody knows each other.
