@acres
If you’re not in California, I personally recommend a multi-load revolver like a
Taurus Raging Judge 513 (not necessarily the Raging Judge as they’re expensive as hell, this is just an example) for versatility; 410 shotshells are great for home defense without the need of a longarm (revolvers are much easier to clean, store, and retrieve), and .454 casull are great for getting used to the heft of the weapon (plus they’re just damned fun) and should you ever decide to go hunting mid+ game.
If you’re in California or another state/region with “sawed-off shotgun laws” or just prefer the “intimidation factor” of a longarm, the
Mossberg 500 All-Purpose 12 Gauge would do well. The unmistakable sound of a pump-action being primed is sometimes all you need, and if you learn how to finger the release you can prime it while unloaded to achieve that end if in a low-risk (homeless getting into your shed, etc.) scenario.
EDIT: Ninja’d. I need to learn to type faster.
