Same here. ^^ John Romero is the best!

I love playing doom with mods. My current favorite is Complex Clusterf***. (Not sure if it needs to censored btw) If I ever make youtube videos, it’ll be on this.

Original Doom is by far one of my favorite games. Or at least, episode 1 of Doom one is lmao

A really good map pack mod is Doom The Way id Did, which tries to make new maps in the same spirit and feel of the original. Throw in some Smooth Doom and the IDKFA remade sountrack and it’s crazy

Emperor of the Fading Suns has released on GOG. I never thought I’d see this game again. It’s… a very unique experience. Highly recommended for anyone who simply wants something new. AI’s not the best, mind you, so if that bugs you then I’d suggest getting one of the major mods that fix it. Emperor Wars, Reality and (if memory serves) Hyperion should all suffice.

I wonder how many of the games on GOG now have DRM of some kind nowadays? Still certain that its not as much as Uplay and Origin do, overall.

Not many, honestly probably less than a score, though GOG zealots will tell you “none, and a service that controls your access rights to your purchase is not DRM” and then post an anti-DRM propaganda site created and owned by CDP as evidence while completely missing the fact that, without low-level services modern digital distribution would not be possible (note: this is in contrast to user-end, invasive DRM - yes, there is a difference).

Holy shit, I never thought I’d see that name again. They pub’d a fantastic Myst-like (Obsidian) and a hilarious overlay tool (Web Vengeance) that occupied a significant portion of my childhood, not to mention held the servers for Heat.Net (MP service for numerous 90’s-00’s games). That’s some vintage memories, there.

Yeah. I think EFS may be the only one of their games (or products) that I ever saw. However I played from back in 97 all the way up until around 2012 or so, when I lost the CD I’d burned my old copy to. One of the most interesting settings I’ve ever seen. One of the most easily modded games I’ve ever seen, too; it was, in fact, the game I cut my modding teeth on. All I needed was Wordpad.

Makes me wish I’d played it in its heyday. My modding cherry pop was Duke3D: Build was an unwieldy behemoth that liked to take your whole computer with it when it crashed, but at least CON editing was plain-text if you understood its language. Beyond the modding, I’m always intrigued by games based off of tabletop/PnP rulesets, so I might have to look into it anyway, though thinking of “grand strategy” from that era makes me miss Ascendancy.

Holy shit. Someone else who played Ascendancy. I have brought that game up with so many people and none of them had even heard of it! Which were you: Minions or Jelly Boobs?

And Emperor of the Fading Suns was apparently developed in tandem with and released alongside the first edition of the Fading Suns tabletop game.

Neither, actually. I was always the Chamachie - the multi-armed lizard scientists. Research victories have always been my thing in 4X’s, and I suppose that’s where I got my start. But I’m glad to know I’m not the only one that called the Govorom “Jelly Boobs”.

EDIT: I suddenly want to recreate the Ascendancy races in Galactic Civilizations III, but I don’t have the drive to create their ship models.

Damn it. I almost went with the treaded robolizards.

With a bit of luck, maybe GoG will eventually revive that one, too. I still have the disc but there’s just no getting it to play on a modern system. Hell, there was no getting it to play on Windows 7.

Actually, it plays really well with DOSBox with a little fiddling, at least it did on 7 (shouldn’t be too different on 10). I may have to dig my disc out and rebuild my config. Should rebuild my Tyrian 2000 config while I’m at it (since OpenTyrian is effectively dead and never got permission to use the 2000 content); it’s been way too long since my last “Lord of the Game” difficulty playthrough and talking about older games is starting to flare a “DOS itch”.

Hmm… will have to grab One Must Fall: 2097 while I’m at it.

I know it is, but its DOSBox config is pretty bad, thus the need to rebuild the config. GOG creates the barest of configs to ensure the games work on as many of systems as possible, to the detriment of performance (a prime example being Might & Magic III). It’s a sound business practice, but leaves something to be desired.

If you’re interested in giving Ascendancy a playthrough, I could tune you a DOSBox config. All I would need is the full install path you intend to use for the game, if you intend to have the disc inserted (for music and videos) and whether or not you have a GUS soundbank (not knowing what that is is an acceptable answer).

Shit. Thanks. I’ll PM you about it. And I noticed some issues with Heroes 3, myself. In my case, for some reason it would crash my entire system when I tried to play it before. Fortunately it no longer does that on the new system but I have to sit through that long ass intro every fucking time I start it up. Which leads to me just never playing it.

86box/PCem are intended for more accurate environment emulation, require system ROMs or OS files, (in terms of game operation) suffer from the same limitations of those original environments, and require more extensive knowledge of the target environement, while DOSBox sacrifices DOS environment accuracy to provide a better emulation environment for gaming. Both have their merits, but overall DOSBox is better if all you intend to do is play DOS games.

Sounds good. You’ve seen me on Steam, feel free to send me a friend request there if that’s easier for you. Probably be easier than asynchronous private messages, but whatever you prefer works.
