It started with Oblivion. All about it - the beginning of Radiant quest system (aka Buggerfall random-gen quests BUT WORSE), removal of physical damage types, simplifying weapon movesets, console-focused UI and horrendous autolevelling were all cost-cutting measures - it’s cheaper to develop a single console UI that can be made to barely work on PC, than to develop separate UIs, and autolevelling everywhere means no need to pay someone to put appropriate monster-lists everywhere (Morrowind had both separate UIs and sane autolevel).
Then F3 came, a blatantly oblivion-with-guns shooter parasitic to Fallout ‘verse, with literally “stuff that makes people think it’s Fallout” all thrown in - hence water, Enclave, supermutants, Harold, etc etc. Extremely mediocre as a shooter with badly rehashed story.
Come Skyrim, and the UI managed to become even shittier with 90% of space wasted, any semblance of RPG stats destroyed, completely shit combat balance due to stacking damage multipliers on bow combat and completely ridding magic of them, and bethesda always having tug-of-war combat system, with damage matched against HP and nothing more (which is also why legbreaking rifle was so ridiculously overpowered in F3, bethesda can’t into status effects that old fallouts were based on) as opposed to “who hits first” like Dark Souls or Gothic, or “status juggling” like Fallout 1/2 or roguelikes. And then bethesda had the gall to DEMAND PEOPLE GIVE THEM MONEY FOR STUFF OTHER PEOPLE (namely, modders) HAVE DONE.
Then F4, which was parasitic for a parasite, with again rehashed antagonists, Radiant demonstrating why it’s complete shit aka ANOTHER SETTLEMENT NEEDS YOUR HELP, their not-changed-since-Morrowind-despite-being-blatantly-unsuitable game engine shitting itself so they had to implement resetting locations, even more ruined lore, ruined weapons models and systems (good gunplay, but that’s because id done it, not bethesda), etc etc.
ALL of those were made by relying on modders to fix bethesda’s shit for free. And then they decided to make F76.
An online game.
Which cannot be modified.
Which was a spark needed for Bethesda’s crashing Hindenburg to come aflame - all their incompetence, all their shitty decisions and money-grubbing revealed all at once.
