Oh, is it? I had written the game off as “never going to play” when I heard about the obstructive DRM. That shit’s a 100% “nope” for me every time, and I have passed up a few games that I really wanted to play over the years because of it.

And they’ve been removing the RPG from RPGs since at least Oblivion. I’ve said it before but I swear Todd must have run a tabletop game at some point and developed a grudge against wizards because Oblivion severely handicapped the magic system and Skyrim all but nuked it from existence.

Also this.

@Officer Hotpants
Yeah, they removed the anti-cheat, and wrote a long letter to the community and all that. Of course, id did this, and id has a history of being very pro consumer, unlike their current parent company Bethesda.

Morrowind was a tiny bit simplified in terms of character creation compared to Daggerfall, but made up for it with a much more interesting world for that character to be in. But yeah, Oblivion is where it got egregious I think.

but it makes them money, I guess lmao. You know people are hyped for Elder Scrolls 6. It works for them

I honestly do expect them to clamp down on the free modding of previous titles with TES6. Most likely by keeping it “free” but constraining it to their servers with their content standards (insofar as they even have standards for content anymore). With all the blunders they made up to this point, it’s the least sensible thing they could do and thus makes the most sense as their next move.

And I love that song. I was going to recommend it if that link went anywhere else.

I genuinely don’t get Bethesda. If you want to have a company that does nothing except produce bland sandbox games that serve as a canvas for an enthusiastic modding community to give your game value for free…fine.

But by Talos’ holy ballsack, why would you then try to punish that community and make them jump through hoops to mod for your game? Especially if your own dev team has become so dependent on the community to basically patch your game for free on their own behalf?

For all the comedy and kerfuffles about it, Fallout 76 ultimately just serves as irrefutable proof that this company has become too complacent and lacks the talent to provide their own games with value anymore. The last thing they want to do is stifle the modding scene.

Not that it will stop them, I fear.

The first mod that comes out for a Bethesda game is pretty much always an unofficial patch. And it usually takes Bethesda several official patches to cover all the fixes included in that first unofficial patch, and sometimes they just never get around to including some of it.

If they’re smart, they’ll continue to work with the system that’s they’ve established. Goodness knows that I can’t think of another company who has created quite the same dev/consumer relationship that they have and it’s a relationship that is wildly profitable. How many games still have thriving playerbases a decade after release to the point that they can re-release a game in-generation? Sadly I just don’t have faith that they’re smart enough to continue doing so, though.

Also, in re-releases (or spin offs that use the same engine coughFallout76cough) some old bugs come back again. Because they’re that dependent on Community-made “Unofficial” Patches. =_=

You say it’s just stupidity on their part, but honestly I can’t help but wonder if there’s some envy and shame in it. Look at how bland and shallow Bethesda’s own works are, then look at the mod projects that get so much praise. Adding new worlds, adding depth back into the game, creating better stories then their own appointed and incredibly over-rated writers.

It makes one realise just how soulless of an endeavour Bethesda games are, the fans legit care more about TES and Fallout then the people who are supposed to be making them. And I can’t help but wonder if they haven’t realised that, and feel like their own efforts are being devalued by comparison.

Compare: Bethesda spends years cranking out a shitty ten-hour discount Morrowind DLC for Skyrim with a discount Cthulthu Mythos vibe. Meanwhile, one dude basically makes an entire new landmass full of stories and with a twenty-hour quest for free in his spare time.

I dunno, I think that makes it clear how lazy they’re becoming, and maybe they just want to kill their own modding scene so they can sell features like that back to us, Atomic Shop style, hiding their own inadequacies.

I wasn’t even talking about Enderal, or that equivalent mod for Oblivion…that’s a different beast for another time. I’m just referring to mods like Falskaar or Midwood Isle.

Okay, let’s say those ones have about twelve-hour campaigns each, and their world sizes are comparable to Solstheim Not-Morrowind in size (Falskaar is noticeably larger), so they’re about on par with the Dragonborn DLC.

This still means Bethesda’s professionally made, paid DLC “expansions” are on par with shit modders make for free. It’s still not a good look for the them.

@FeatherTrap
Shit. I still need to finish Falskaar, now that you mention it. I just gone through the escape from the capital when I left off. I stopped for a while because the constant random crashing of Skyrim was making me want to kill something. Funny thing, though. I’ve had none of the random crashing to desktop that I get every 40-50 minutes with normal Skyrim. I’ve had a grand total of three, and two of those were from trying to equip my ghost companion. Normal Skyrim I’m almost afraid of battle anymore because, for whatever reason, killing anything seems to be the #1 way to cause a crash to desktop. Particularly with bows.

New BAFTA Award Standards: Any Game that Refuses to be Left-Wing Propaganda is Disqualified from Receiving an Award.

Okay, I know that no gamers actually care about the BAFTA Awards, but I think this kind of BS still needs to be highlighted because so many people deny the games industry is infested with political activists.
In spite of the mountain of evidence to the contrary. I know this is just one more stone to add to the mountain, but still…

I did mention I know that gamers don’t actually care about them. But it is more proof that the industry is infested with activists masquerading as judges, journalists and even developers.

wait, whats all this rebel talk about talos being holy? you violating the imperial law boyo?

––
that aside, this is a old one but

i was born into a poor family so i never had the opportunity to play much games or any of the popular titles (i never played halo, never owned consoles, so on and so forth)

so naturally i did take the free candy from the epic games store, as much as i disliked that practice

one of the games i really liked from it is alan wake, i remembered seeing it around release and never saw it again, but playing it in this year, i really liked it, history, gameplay, combat, even the graphics managed to be really nice years after the fact, and i really loved it

then there is the sequel, american nightmare

wich is around 1/10th of the original game in general content, and you replay it 3 times because it plays with the concept of a time loop. the original survival horror charm and concept of light vs dark is gone, the diffculty is also somewhat gone

i can only scratch my head at this, i mean i havent researched what happened and i doubt is anything relevant but still, they removed so much and added so little, it feels like a dumbed down arcade-y version

maybe that was the true american nightmare all along

BAFTA is actually a charitable organization that supports artistic growth in the UK in TV and film, though first recognized games as an artistic form as part of “interactive media” back in 1998, then gave them equal recognition as of 2006; they’re certainly a lot more respectable than the “awards” we tend to give out here in the States. It’s only relatively recently - say, the past few years - they’ve become a bit political, and it’s eating away at their credibility.

Continuing from the other thread…

@Azure Fang
I can never decide which was his biggest act of douchebaggery. On the one hand, there’s the time he ordered the creator of another mod to update his work to be compatible with FU or else Sayter’d just incorporate it and “take his audience”. On the other hand, a friend of mine made the FU extension for the spawnable item pack. Sayter didn’t like that and tried to disable the mod with code in FU designed to target it. I was going to report his ass and get him kicked from Steam but my friend caved a bit and removed a few items from the list that were pissing him off and he backed off. From what I later heard, some of the other people who work on FU were using the SIP extension, themselves, and essentially told him to eat a dick and that’s why he settled.

Yeah. Sayter’s a dick. FU has actually been knocked off of Steam a few times over the last few years because, in spite of his big, emotional apology a while back, he still hasn’t stopped stealing other people’s content for his mod. Most recent case that I know of, he tried to deny it only for someone to go through and show where the dumbass hadn’t even changed any internal names for anything.

I really ought to look into this whole thing, seems like a very deep rabbit-hole. This dude sounds like he has an ego the size of a Karen. I heard there was something bad about him before, but holy fuck this is way worst then I thought. Why doesn’t the mod community just stop supporting the guy?

No problem. And there’s been other incidents, of course. Like when he stole from… I think it was the Avali mod. I know he had a ton of Avali material in FU early on. Anyway, he stole a bunch of assets from SOME race mod and it was causing conflicts for people who used that race mod together with FU. His response? Going to the maker of the mod he ripped the assets from and telling them to “fix” their mod to be compatible with FU.

Oh, and contrary to what he says he doesn’t “do this shit for free”. He has a patreon page for the mod that dates back to 2015 and brings in a little over $200 a month
