The outrage from Willow’s cancellation is proceeding along predictable lines. Disney is being accused of bigotry by their selected audience. They’re going to have to learn what pandering to these people leads to.
Shazam 2 pulled in $11.7m for the Friday box office take. Since Friday’s numbers are always bundled with the Thursday previews as “Friday+” in the reporting, Thursday’s $3.4m is included in that number.
Shazam ended up pulling down $30.5m domestic opening weekend. That’s lower than the most pessimistic pre-release projections, but right in line with estimates made after the Thursday preview numbers came in. Combined with its international take, it made about $65m.
This is the fifth box office loser in a row for the DCEU, with three entries to go before the DCU reboot, none of which are a sure win. I don’t even know that The Flash is that important anymore, since Blue Beetle and Aquaman 2 are now coming out after it. Near as I can tell, instead of ending everything with Flashpoint and picking up with the DCU, they’re just going to quit the DCEU unceremoniously after the next Aquaman.
Victoria Alonso is gone from Marvel. She’s the one who was behind the identity politics turn that the MCU took in Phase 4. She’s also the one responsible for the degradation of the MCU’s visual effects, as well as Disney becoming such an abusive client to VFX artists.
Except for how important she was. She was both head of production and co-president of Marvel. She had as much creative control as Feige, as well as all the power when it came to actually making the movies.
