As an Asian writer, I noticed that there are many guides on how to respectfully write a non-White character, including that of my own Chinese people.
Just for fun, I’m thinking about finding a guide that applies the same to White people, since in Malaysia, White peoples are among the expats and minorities (the majority is Malay, followed by Chinese, south Indians, and aboriginal Orang Asli).
What would you consider as tips on how to better portray my White characters in my works? Some of them are the protagonists, but there are some rather uncomfortable scenarios (if you do mind):
- One of them is an orphan raised by a non-White family
- One of them comes from a people abused as slaves, or seen poorly with stereotypes (e.g. others think his blonde hair shows that he is very stupid)
- One of them (including the same adopted White guy) has his people as a minority in the main setting, because his people were refugees from a purge back in his homeland.
- One of them is seen as “stupid” because he is not as warrior-like to his friends. In spite of his tough physique, he loves hugs. To be fair, his friends also have other weaknesses too (like bad temper, arrogance, etc.).
It’s also because from what I had seen on the internet, any depictions of White people either only as villains (contrasting a rushed, propped multicultural protagonist team), or not as almighty Mary Sues would be considered “anti-White”.
