Frankly, unless they take his helmet off to reveal: another, identical helmet underneath-making it one of the best fandom in-jokes in TV show history-then it’s still going to be shit. Why take his helmet off at all unless it’s specifically to piss off fans?
Is it to make him more “relatable” to a wider audience? Cause that worked so well for fuckin’ Boba Fett, didn’t it? Remember when they gave him a show, where he could naval gaze the camera and spout dialogue that gave everyone the impression that he’s going senile? Didn’t you all love that version so much more then the imposing, stoic and ruthless merc who was only known by the appearance of his distinct armour?
Chief shouldn’t be ‘relatable’, like most ‘vulnerable and deep’ protagonists these days. SPARTANs are supposed to be emotional stunted sociopaths who are utterly loyal only to the UEG (the lesser known United Earth Government, the actual civilian governing body of the Halo Universe) and it’s subordinate authorities, mainly the United Nations Space Command and the Office of Naval Intelligence.
And also side note: Bad things happen to character =/= Deep or Interesting character. You can’t just have your perfect little progressive angel, then have a nasty thing happen to them so they piss their eyes and call that “character growth”. How the trails and challenges effect their personality and motivation are indictive of a deep and interesting character, not just the bad things on their own.
It’s hard to translate Chief into a non video game format because in the narrative of the universe, SPARTANs are supposed to be seen as more then human, the demigods of war that can turn the tide of an unwinnable battle. The appearance of one on the battlefield is enough to instantly raise the morale of even the most broken marine, and assure them by their mere presence that victory is assured.
That works for the game, in which the story plays out almost like a biblical legend but in space, with you being the divine hero at the centre. But for a TV show like the one they’re going for? Not so much.
