>And why is there still an unknown region taking up between 1/3 and 1/2 of the galaxy?
Well, officially there excuses are
some sort of hyperdrive barrier (I wish I could dig out my Essential Atlas over this page) and…
>People have been able to hyperdrive the length and breadth of the known galaxy for over 25,000 years. There shouldn’t be any dark corners left.
Hyperdrive navigation being a really complicated process that meant blazing hyperspace lanes wasn’t simply a process of going from “point A” to “point B”. I think the latter might have been a passable excuse if they had made the settings in the past with obviously more primitive technology, but considering how settings, especially games, wanted things to be more familiar, technology even back then is
way too modern and thus it feels like everybody just sat around and things were stagnant.
As for the barrier explanation, I understood why they did it on some level, to keep some level of intimacy of the setting to the Galaxy we know over having adventures all over the local group, but I don’t like it. It doesn’t feel it fully fits with all we see,
Kamino from beyond the other rim maybe we can argue where Obi Wan pointed but even then, going into the EU, there is a good bit of examples things being at least hinted at from outside of certain things being outside the galaxy right? Maybe a better explanation would be range limitation of hyper drive technology (yeah, we can send stuff out there but there is no way to refuel) and perhaps some other type of hazard, like a black holes in the void. Though from what I can recall from how hyper drive technology works it might be hard to stretch that considering the main hazard is gravity from stellar objects so it would be hard to work out on why it wouldn’t be easier to travel in between the void.
TD;LR Yeah, I agree with ya.
