Ponybooru's General Cartoon and Western Animation Thread

What does everyone think of Smiling Friends? I like it, and I hope we see more of the like.

Dungeons and Dragons is a 1983 cartoon about a group of friends who were transported into the game.
 

 
Captain N is a 1989 cartoon about a guy who got sucked into Videoland while playing Punch-Out.
 

 
King Arthur and the Knights of Justice is a 1992 cartoon about an American football team that was transported to Camelot by Merlin to stand in for King Arthur and his knights.
 

 
Isekai is associated with Japan, but the West has its own isekai tradition. If you think about it, both the Neverending Story and The Pagemaster were isekais.

You know what’s weird, Fairly Oddparents has the perfect way to continue indefinitely and not piss people off by going more and more cringe.  
Just have Timmy grow up and lose Cosmo and Wanda. Then they’re assigned to a new kid for a few years, and then another and so on.

Was the show popular? I remember watching it here and there, but never really felt invested in any way. I also don’t remember anyone talking about it.

The first couple of seasons were popular. I remember seeing merchandise, kids in middle school talked about it, after Channel Chasers, one of the movie specials, it pretty much dropped off everyone’s radar. I wouldn’t be surprised if after Channel Chasers people thought it was over with. It was pretty much the perfect conclusion. Timmy grows up, loses the fairies, and has two kids. One really cool thing is that the kids look like him, but you can’t tell who the mother could be, so there’s no big shipping war between the Trixie fans and Tootie fans. It’s implied at the end that Cosmo and Wanda are now his children’s. It was such a nice ending. But then the show continued on and on… Eventually the rules the show had set up were gone and even fans who were still watching got fed up with it. Little kids I don’t think were watching, in high school we worked with elementary school students, and I talked to sone about their favorite shows. Phineas and Ferb, Spongebob, stuff like that but not Fairly Oddparents.  
That’s why I don’t get them constantly trying to bring it back. Who’s the audience?

I started watching Cow and Chicken for the first time. It’s really good.

I think i watched that when i was too young, i remember watching it because there wasn’t anything else on, but never did it really grab me.

If I watched it when I was little, I think I would’ve loved it. I’ve always liked weird and different. It’s usually compared to Ren and Stimpy, but I think it’s far faster paced than that. The animation is also alot more bouncy and stretchy. I’ve only watched a few episodes in, but I’ve heard its quality stays a bit more consistent than Ren and Stimpy.

 
Turning Red is actually pretty good. It’s pretty much Teen Wolf mixed with As Told By Ginger.

The last time I clicked on this kind of article, they proceeded to summarize an episode that made it abundantly clear that Simpsons was just spinning it’s wheels.

It even uses a live action sequence with the protagonists practicing their garage band thing before being isekai’ed into an animated world.

That’s actually a good point, i grew up with these shows, but i think Isekai idea is associated Anime is because of the meme-able number popping up over the last decade. Most of which fail to grasp the concept, badly executed and just crash and burn.

How Western are we talking? Does Russia/USSR count for the purposes of the thread?

I watched an episode of the Hanna Barbera Godzilla show for the first time and now I want to hurt something.

I liked Taz-mania when I was younger. Taz is a strange character for a spinoff, given that he can’t really talk, but they made it work.

SWAT Kats is one of the most tragic cases of squandered potential. It could have been huge, if it hadn’t been killed right at the starting line by Ted Turner.

The original Swat Kats concept was fortunately ignored to favor what we actually got.

It’s okay so far. Performances are great all around, music is decent, direction is competent, lighting is ASS.  
Who’s brilliant idea was it to make everything overcast with shadows?

My guess would be CGI considerations. Why are so many Hollywood movies dark and dimly lit? It is often to hide the contrast between the CGI and the non CGI elements. Though I am far from a expert on such that is what I always have heard.
