I’ve been watching Arthur since it first aired in 1996. The first three seasons are among the best cartoons ever made. As such I’ve thought a whole lot about this show and hopefully some of y’all have too.

D.W.’s new best friend

Just saw this episode today (I guess technically yesterday). I almost never watch new episodes of Arthur because they look like crap for one, are full of retcons, and most are very special. Every character has to be very special now. They can’t just be normal kids who you can see yourself into any one of them, each has to be of a specific ethnicity and have specific diseases.

But this episode I liked. Even though there are retcons in this episode too.

Bud can’t be in this episode, because the Compson family moved away the previous season. If we can just bring characters back as if nothing happened then there’s no emotional impact of them leaving, is there?

I feel like we’ve done this story before at least once. It reminds me a lot of Muffy Gets Mature. Little kid does something to impress older kid, misunderstands older kid being nice to mean they’re now inseparable soulmates, gets feelings hurt when older kid wants to spend more time with peers than with little kids.

Did D.W. even learn anything? She was the one who hurt Bud’s feelings first by telling him he wasn’t her best friend, and then got served her just desserts later on, but she got to play the victim card (in a song!) and shames this poor girl who was volunteering her time to help little kids in front of the parents of all those kids, and gets an apology out of her but doesn’t learn anything! At the end of the episode she’s still the same as at the beginning. Bud even admits in the episode that he’s become numb to her abusive behavior toward him.

Depending on the writer D.W. can be just a kind of dickish kid to being a narcissistic sadist who is able to manipulate pretty much anyone into getting everything she wants and never has to face the repercussions of her actions. At least half of Arthur’s problems come from his parents not properly disciplining D.W.

That episode apparently dates itself. The concert is on 8 June (according to the flyer) which is said to be a Saturday. This combination occurs only three times after 1996: 2002, 2013, and 2019. Judging by the ubiquity of smartphones in the episode we can rule out 2002, so this episode takes place in either 2013 or 2019, and I’m leaning more toward the latter.

I always thought Arthur may have been influenced by Doug.
The first episode of Disney’s Doug even has a cameo from Arthur and Buster.

I should have said something yesterday. 6 day long marathon of every Arthur episode, 24 hours a day non-stop on PBS Kids channel. The show is ending and they’re going to show the entire last season all in a row on the final day.

Arthur is over and it is sad.

In the end we discovered that:

*Nadine was the one who stole DW’s snowball and she gave it back in the second to last episode.

*Francine’s grandmother dies and there’s a whole episode dedicated to it, which is the second death episode as far as I remember and the first time a “human” character dies.

*Buster grows up to be a teacher

*Francine grows up to be the owner of a shoe company

*Binky grows up to be the TV weatherman

*Muffy grows up to run for mayor (though the election hasn’t happened yet)

*George grows up to own the Sugar Bowl

*DW grows up to be a cop

*And Arthur grows up to write the Arthur books

What happened to Brain and Sue Ellen? Who knows, they don’t appear in the last episodes.

What about Brain? Fuck off Brain, he was annoying. He annoyed the crap out of me. I couldn’t stand him. He was okay early on when he was just a smart kid who acted like a kid and was naive like a kid, but then he became the smartest person in the entire universe who had to show off and be a killjoy in every episode.

And it actually makes sense for Sue Ellen not to be there, since her family travels around the world all the time.

Sounds like something an MCU character would do.
And does Arthur marry Francine? I recall future scenarios shown quite a few times where they’re together.
Maybe Brain isn’t there because of a Stand By Me thing, and he got killed.
Also, i thought wouldn’t it be better if the books Arthur wrote were about a Marc?
