The Sator square is a meme that dates back to the Roman Republic. The oldest dated example is in Pompeii, but it’s been found in France, Britain, and Italy, among other places. The square forms a palindrome that can be read horizontally or vertically. The word ‘AREPO’ has no known translation, so scholars are still debating various readings.
