Link to an imgur of a ton of pony tutorials for anyone needing to either brush up their foundations or wanting to learn on their own time.

Others please feel free to add more so folks can learn how to pony properly.

I feel dumb being so late to the thread but does anyone have an idea of where to start learning fundamentals from ground up? I’m not a huge fan of books but can deal, but I really want to improve in both pony art, and art in general (humans, landscapes, anything I really feel like). Just kind of tired of going nowhere for so long, and I don’t want to get trapped in “muh style” meme. Desperately looking for some direction that goes beyond nebulous “just, like, get good lmao” tier tips, without assuming I’m above my current skill level.

From what I can tell, “form” is what’s best to start with? What is the best way to practice and understand form?

Well, first up there’s line exercises to get your line quality up. These make for a good warm up for when you start drawing for the day. This is just the first search result, you should look up others as well : https://thevirtualinstructor.com/blog/10-exercises-for-confident-lines-and-accurate-hatching

Next, there’s gesture drawing: https://quickposes.com/en/gestures/timed

Other bits of fundamentals practice include contour drawing, figure drawing, and still life. Do a search for these and you’ll find plenty of examples/tutorials.

Loomis is always good: https://www.alexhays.com/loomis/

Do lots of anatomy studies. Bridgman’s anatomy books get recommended a lot, but they’re not legally available online for free.

Search for tutorials of what you wanna draw and follow them, and try to draw whatever it is multiple times.

Just study the work of artists you like, pick one of their drawings and try to copy it. If they’ve released unfinished sketches try to ink and color them.

I don’t know how useful this stuff is but I’ll dump it anyway.

Yes, pony legs are like human legs. And ALL OTHER SPECIES WITH LEGS. The differences are bats (the entire leg is backwards), insects (ditto) and reptiles (tends to stick out sideways), but the bones stay the same. Even birds have the same leg structure, their foot is just HUGE and knee is very well hidden by their fluff and lies.
