The assembly line filler that so many artists churn these days for quick money isn’t too different from what AI does. I don’t see AI and meat rebots as fundamentally different things when so many “artists” are charging hundreds of dollars to do a glorified recolor of an image. A computer may not be able to care, but a human can care just as little as a computer.

The outcome of this might be that these so-called artists lose out to AI that can do the same thing they’ve been doing for money. Just like the horse industry, they’ll scream bloody murder now that their job is being replaced with technology. Why would anyone pay for a YCH when they can provide an AI with any picture and ask it to put their character there?

Real artists will survive. Assembly line “artists” will need to flip burgers. I won’t cry for them.

I just don’t care. If you want to draw, you’ll draw. Just like if you want to code, you’ll code. The fact that there’s an easier way to do it only matters if you’re more interested in the end result than the process of creation.

Or how widely ported and maintained game engines just took out all the “under the hood” work (like working on 3D physics each time). It is a outcome of all this that may occur I admit. Though…

…I just feel a certain spark of technophobia with this. It feels like when refined and coupled with a few other emerging technologies it maybe more a monster that removes something human from art and culture. Not saying there aren’t benefits with this or the possibility that a massive flourishing of art and creativity will be now accessible to those of us who can’t make things like this aren’t also in the cards, but I still reserve some distrust.

“Artists will be feeding inputs to AIs instead of directly making art. Making a sketch, giving it a sample of a style, and then having it fill it out.” And then using their artistic ability to polish the result. It ends up mostly being a timesaver.

Artists have had a monopoly on art for far too long. The big change from AI is that it will make some degree of artistic expression possible for many people who totally lack artistic ability. Creativity may thrive under limits, but not when those limits are total.

I think this will end up the way that compilers changed programming. Artists will be feeding inputs to AIs instead of directly making art. Making a sketch, giving it a sample of a style, and then having it fill it out.

That is something of the scary part ain’t it? As much as our every wish and whim might soon be granted by AI, creativity supposedly thrives under limits as they say and these AIs might break that. Albeit, it could be incorporated and used just like any other tech before it. Photoshop merely democratized and made easier a lot of techniques that already existed. So does this for art creation in general. I can’t help but feel this is different.
